The furthest and easternmost of the Aeolian Islands. The ancients called it Strongyle, (the rotunda). To visit the small town, located around the sandy tip Lena where you arrive by landing in Ficogrande or San Vincenzo, which form a single village.
The second town, Ginostra, is a small village along the south-eastern coast accessible only by sea. The village, which has about thirty inhabitants, stretches on a steep slope where the few houses, even today, keep the traditional Aeolian architecture intact.
Stromboli is the only volcano in Europe and one of the few in the world in permanent eruptive activity. Its volcano is about 920 meters high and the seabed is very deep (1200 m.). Its inhabitants usually call it "(He)", to show that the volcano is part of them, as a person or a very dear entity, as if to exorcise the fact of living at the foot of an active volcano.
The island's seascape is rich in caves, including the cave of Aeolus. Also characteristic are the Strombolicchio, a rock to the north that rises steeply for 56 meters on the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Sciara del Fuoco, a steep wall along which the incandescent material slides ending up in the sea. The latter, to be seen at night, can only be reached by sea.
At night, its intermittent glow can be seen at a great distance, which is why the island has been called the "Lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian".
